As you have likely heard, there are two major cybersecurity events occurring right now- the Kaseya-REvil ransomware attack and Window’s PrintNightmare. Both cyber attacks are significant in terms of size and scope. So much so that cybercriminals are taking the opportunity to launch spin off-type scams.
One such scam is a malicious email campaign targeting victims of the Kaseya-REvil ransomware event. In short, the email claims to have a fix for the Kaseya attacks in the form of a Windows update when in reality, all it has is an email attachment that breaks into people's computers and networks. If someone opens the attachment, it includes the penetration testing software Cobalt Strike. The software can then be used to break into networks or machines. Unfortunately, it is likely only a matter of time until cybercriminals piggyback off the PrintNightmare attack and create a similar fake email campaign in an attempt to gain access to computers and networks.
Everyone needs to be vigilant and take control of their own cybersecurity. Here are a handful of things you can do to reduce your risk of becoming a victim:
- Do NOT open ANY attachments from people you do not know, no matter how pressing it seems or tempting it is to open. Delete it. If it is truly important, they will call you.
- Be on high alert for phishing e-mails from PEOPLE YOU KNOW. If it “feels” off or wrong, do not click on any links or open the attachment. Their system could be compromised and being used to scam everyone in their in-box.
- If any Microsoft Office application ever asks you to “Enable Macros,” do not accept.
- Only go to known, ESSENTIAL websites.
